RAFFAELLO SANZIO DA URBINO (1483 – 1520), better known as RAPHAEL, was an Italian painter and architect of the High Renaissance. His work is admired for its clarity of form, ease of composition, and visual achievement of the Neoplatonic ideal of human grandeur. Together with Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo, he forms the traditional trinity of great masters of that period.

“Raphael was enormously productive, running an unusually large workshop and, despite his early death at 37, leaving a large body of work. He was extremely influential in his lifetime.

“After his death, the influence of his great rival Michelangelo was more widespread until the 18th and 19th centuries, when Raphael's more serene and harmonious qualities were again regarded as the highest models. His techniques would later be explicitly and emphatically rejected by groups such as the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood.”

It was a quartet. Donatello is the fourth.

There is beauty, dignity, serenity in Raphael’s paintings. Superb artist of the Italian Renaissance!
For your enjoyment, an article describing the artistic evolution of Raphael:

Interesting how a quartet of anthropomorphic trans-amphibians who belong to a cult of assassins , named after Renaissance Artists, could become American kids’ 21st Century Role Models, eh? :-)

Almost as plausible as a kitchen sponge with square pants living in the ocean.

While I thoroughly appreciate Raphael and other Renaissance Giants, my personal tastes in Bible Illustration veer towards Hole and Tissot. There’s something about their finely researched realism that really appeals to me.

Sorry about the Ninja Turtles joking. I couldn’t resist. (Mea Culpa!)

Bingo!

And the element of Tissot's work elevating him above all others for me is his thoughtfulness, his imagination. No one else imagined the magi's camels in a line stretching to the horizon, nor Jesus' view from the cross.

I’m not against abstract art, but Tissot’s paintings speak to me in a different way.

Good Morning Dan, and glad ‘near the end of the week’ greetings.

You’ve introduced another winner today. I see that Rafael is greatly loved, twisted sponges and the (thankfully rare) law breaking tortoise notwithstanding.

Thank You Dan.

I remember you posting this painting Dan- a personal favorite indeed. Stunning, with a great sense of perspective and timelessness.
